Nighthawk RAX78 Randomly Blocks Connected Devices

My Nighthawk RAX78 is set to Allow about 10 connected devices on our network. While streaming Hulu through the FireTV Stick, our program froze. When I checked network settings on the FireTV Stick, the Huge Red NETGEAR popup stated the device was blocked. When I logged into the router Advanced>Security>Access Control, I could see that about 7 of our ten previously allowed devices were now Blocked (red).

The router did this independently, and in the middle of a program (demonstrating that the device was not previously blocked). For example, it had blocked my wife's phone, but not mine, and her laptop, but not my pc. This is disturbing behavior from any device that is intended to be set and forget !!!

The firmware is the latest v1.0.11.112, and this device has been trouble free for several months. Previous router was the Nighthawk 7000, and I'm very comfortable and confident in my setup. I'm less confident in any device that acts independently in this manner.

This same behavior has been reported on different firmwares by different users in 2020 & 2021 on this same model - Netgear, you have a bug.

  • try reinstalling the firmware on it and then doing a factory reset/reinstall.

If something was corrupted in the firmware, the reinstall will over write that. If something was corrupt in the settings, the factory reset will clear that out.

    That's where I'd start.

Thanks so very much michaelkenward plemans for the sensible advice and quick responses. This was my first hiccup on the router in about 5 months of ownership. I did notice that the firmware had also been set to auto-update, and I also changed that. I prefer to look at the change notes before updating, as well as to let other users be the pioneers (the ones with the arrows in their backs <wink>) before jumping to the newest updates (except where high security vulnerabilities exist).

Again, I'm grateful for your help, and will hope this issue is put to rest  by following these sound recommendations.
