Nighthawk RAXE300 randomly stopped working... help!

I've had my Netgear Night Hawk RAXE 300 WIFI 6E set up now for about 8 months and had zero issues.

Yesterday I woke up to my Google cams saying they were offline and realised we had no internet.

2G & 5G bands were there when I searched for WiFi but I couldn't connect, it kept asking for my password again and putting in my password would either not connect or say no internet.

I restarted the router and modem multiple times and same issue. Logging into the Netgear router login it would fluctuate between saying no internet and good internet even though it wasn't receiving anything. The light on the unit would show the internet symbol as red or white. If it did let me connect it was hideously slow and sometimes show a DNS issue on my laptop.

Our modem is a virgin media hub 5 router that I have put into modem mode. I thought it might be that being an issue so I disconnected the Netgear router, factory reset the modem and put it back to router mode. That then had great internet.

So I put it back to modem mode, factory reset the RAXE300 and set it back up from scratch using the same name/password as before so my devices would reconnect. I then power cycled the modem and router but no avail.

After doing all that I can connect to the 2G line fine, my cameras and TV are back on with internet but my wife can't connect at all, just says no internet and I can't connect to the 5G line at all whatsoever.

I have no idea what's wrong but it's driving me mad, I've been trying to fix this for about 14 hours now... I have no idea why it just stopped working over night... Please help!

Fixed it! Put the IPS modem back to router mode, put the RAXE300 into AP mode, back to insane speeds but noticed it was still broadcasting 2g/5g/6g separately.

Decided to put the IPS router back to modem mode, factory reset the RAXE300 then logged into the router login and smart mode was disabled along with OFDMA, enabled both of those and it worked.

I was previously getting 60mbps download when connected to the 2G (the only one it allowed me to connect to previously) doing a speed test, now I'm back to 965mbps down. It's fixed!

What firmware version do you have on the router?

"The latest" is not a reliable or helpful indicator when troubleshooting. It depends on how you check the firmware version.

The on-board check for new firmware is unreliable. It can miss updates, especially if you are a long way behind the latest. It can also be a while before updates hit the automated update servers.

The best way to check is to visit the support pages for your device and to look at the library of available updates.

Is it just the wife's device that cannot connect? What is it?

When there is just one wifi client that won't play ball, I'd start by troubleshooting that.

Is this likely to be relevant?

The RAXE300 is a "smart connect" device. By default, it does not broadcast 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz as separate SSIDs.

What do the wifi LEDs on the front look like? All on?

In all of your efforts, did you remember to start everything in the right order?

Be sure to restart your network in this sequence:

    • Turn off and unplug modem.
    • Turn off router and computers.
    • Plug in and turn on modem. Wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on the router and wait 2 minutes for it to connect.
    • Turn on computers and rest of network.

Before I reset the RAXE 300 I manually went to the support website, downloaded the latest update and uploaded it to the router. I wasn't relying on auto update as it was out of date.

Apologies, I didn't specify, my wife couldn't connect whatsoever before doing the reset. After the reset she can connect but only to the 2G, just like me and the speeds are slow.

Our RAXE 300 has always broadcasted 2G/5G/6G separately. The 2G works but it's slow. The 5G does not let us connect now, asks for the password but then doesn't connect and we don't have anything that sees (or supports) the 6G.

All WiFi LEDs are on and internet connect LED is white since the reset.

I have power cycled the router and modem in the order you have mentioned multiple times, this does not resolve the issue.
  • It wouldn't be the first time and update from and ISP device broke its modem only/passthrough mode.

Have you tried leaving it in router mode with the RAXE in access point mode?

Ah you think this is an ISP issue with Virgin Media?

I'm unsure of what access mode is, although I'm sure it disabled features etc. surely that makes the RAXE 300 irrelevant if it's basically just a WiFi extender?

double nat's can sometimes cause strange issues.

And it isn't unheard of for an ISP gateway to be a bit junky.

If a reset didn't fix it and you know its (the gateway) is in passthrough mode, then I'd check the gateway for issues.

Try it in router mode and the RAXE300 in access point mode. If it works fine, it means something on the ISP gateway is causing issues (like their passthrough mode). If it still has issues, then it could be an issue of the RAXE.
