C7800 Nighthawk X4S AC3200 WiFi Cable Modem Router won't factory reset
Try as I might, holding the reset button forever, using the 30/30/30 approach, etc., I cannot seem to get the admin password to change back to password. After 3 failed attempts, I continue to get asked security questions at the gateway password reset prompt. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The unit works just fine otherwise, and still has the default networks with their respective default password.
Does this happen with a different browser? Try MS-Edge, Firefox or Opera.
Disconnect the ISP coax cable from the modem as well before trying a factory reset.

How are you trying to get onto the modem/router?
While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.
You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:Cable Modems & Gateways - NETGEAR Communities
You might like to search there for messages related to your issue.
I will ask the Netgear moderator to move your message.
In the meantime you could visit the support pages:

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware. Look at the label on the device for the model number.
Check for various troubleshooting tips.
You may have done this already. I can't tell from your message.
I mention it because Netgear stopped supplying printed manuals and CD versions some years ago and people sometimes miss the downloads. - albreyerAspirant
I'm trying on my computer via a browser:
and also trying with the Nighthawk app on my phone.
The browser does recognize the serial number. I tested this by putting in a bad one on purpose once to see what would happen that way (I don't get the security questions).

I don't recall seeing that solution online before. Disconnecting the coax got me over the hump.
Thank you kindly for the quick responses and expert advice.
