Expected Speed

Hello all,

I recently installed a Nighthawk x4-AC3200 C7500 Cable Modem Router.  After getting it up and running, I ran a speed test.  I am signed up with a Spectrum account that offers 400 mbps.  When I ran the test, I was getting around 417 mbps on my desktop which is connected via an ethernet cable.  Then I ran the same test on my laptop which is connected wirelessly.  When I ran that test, I was only getting 17-22 mbps.  I also have an extender and I ran they test there as well.  This test was pretty much the same as the wireless test - 17-25 mbps.

Based on these results, I thought there might be an issue with my new modem / router so just to check, I connected my previous modem/ router back up and ran the same tests again and I got pretty much the same results.  What gives?  I know I would never get the same as when connected via ethernet but that is a pretty drastic difference between wireless and wired.

Please keep in mind, when I was testing my wireless and extender wireless, I had everything in the same room about 5 ft away from each other so there was nothing in the way of the signal.

thoughts are appreciated

So you say you hooked up the old modem/router device and got the same results. The same low speeds?  it makes me believe its the device you're testing with when that happens.

A lot of wireless speed is based upon the antenna and chipset in the device you're testing with. Thats why its hard to use wireless speeds as speedtesting. If you're device's wireless is only a wireless 2.4ghz based on older technology, its going to be slow. Do you konw the wireless chip in your laptop?

Do you have a different wireless device you can test with that you know if 5ghz and is connecting to the 5ghz?  5ghz has higher bandwidth but lower penetration.

Also, what is your house made of? plaster lathe, brick, hvac, concrete, adobe all do great jobs of blocking wireless signals.

You are right about 5G, I also tested both modems with my phone and with 5G I was able to get 150-170 mbps.  Even with my phone (Galaxy Note 8), I was able to get about 20 mbps on 2.4G.

Are you getting to spec speeds on wired speed testing?

Has a factory reset and setup from scratch been performed since chaning ISP speeds?
