Gigabit ports
Instructions are vague to me. Can I plug a laptop with an ethernet cable into LAN1 and set my network router up by plugging it into LAN2 with no adverse effects of speeds? Or can I ONLY connect an ethernet cable betweeen the router and the modem and then HAVE TO plug the laptop into the router? The instructions make it sound that way to me.

Who could possibly know? What is your "a laptop"? What is your "my
network router"? What is your "the modem"? Who is your ISP? "LAN1" on
what? "LAN2" on what? What are you trying to do?

Which "The instructions"?
Assuming that some Netgear router (or other device) is involved
somehow, visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model
number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual. Read.
If questions remain, then return with some useful information about
your equipment, your intent, your actions, their results, and so on,
targeted at non-psychics who can't see what you have, what you're doing,
or what happens when you do it.Wow, sorry for the incomplete post - My first time using this board. I had the modem model number listed in the header of the post, CM1100. This community site needs updated as it does not allow a user to select this particular modem from a drop-down list. I thought that I was asking a pretty generic question, I was obviously wrong. I called Netgear support for an answer to my question and was given an incorrect response. It is not described on the modem box or in the literature included, but If anyone needs to know - the CM1100 has two Ethernet ports located on the back of the modem. You can use LAN1 to connect an Ethernet device to the modem. LAN2 can only be used in conjunction with LAN1 as part of a Link Aggregation Group (LAG). The CM1100 can only support one wired Ethernet connection at a time.

Your ISP will ONLY give you one Public IP unless you have signed up for multiple IP service which Most ISPs do not. Please only connect one device to one LAN port.
you can use 2 LAN ports for one device if you setup LAG with a LAG capable router.
