How to connect to DNS server with N450

I have a N450 CG3000Dv2 cable modem/wifi router.  It has properly connected to the cable service and all devices on the network have access to the internet.  I am trying to connect it to OpenDNS to act as an internet filter.  I have used this service in the past with my other routers.  This is my first Netgear router.  I have used their cable modems in the past.  Logging into the router through 192.168.0.1 from a wired connection I choose Advanced.  Here I see Internet Port with all the information I'm familiar with.  I see my IP address, MAC, Gateway and DNS.  I see that the ones I want are listed, namely 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.  Also present are the addresses for my ISP servers.  If I then chose Setup -> Internet Setup.  I see the option to specify the DNS servers.  It is here that I have entered the ones I want and chosen the option for "Use These DNS Servers" instead of the default, "Get Automatically from ISP".  However, if I goto to the command prompt and enter nslookup I see my ISP servers instead of the OpenDNS ones.  Also if I use ipconfig /all I see the wrong DNS servers.  This seems to be setup correctly but it is not using the right servers.  After this didn't work I downloaded the Genie app and setup "Parental Controls" which also uses OpenDNS and it still doesn't work.  I am on Windows 10 but that shouldn't matter as the android tablets and phones attached the network as also going through the ISP DNS.  What is the correct way to use the DNS servers I want?

  • You probably have overridden the DNS servers on your computer.  On your computer, go the IP settings for your network adapter and choose the option to Obtain DNS server address automatically.

That might be true for the computer but the android devices have the same issue.  The properties of the network adapter show DNS server for IPv4 DNS Servers is 192.168.0.1 which is the router.  For IPv6 it shows the ISP.  Also the adapter shows Obtain DNS server address automatically for both the IP4 and IP6 protocols.

It's normal for devices to show 192.168.0.1 as the DNS server.  The router will forward all DNS queries to the correct DNS servers.  I'm not sure if the CG3000DV2 has any settings for IPv6.
