Insecure Password Reset?

When I tried to wake up my LG Windows 10 laptop this morning, although my WiFi was active, my Netgear AC1900 WiFi Cable Modem Router was not connected to the internet.  So I tried what usually works by hitting Disconnect and then restarting the connection.  The result was a screen I'd never seen since I purchased the modem/router in November of 2019: a "Netgear Genie" page demanding that I reset my password and security questions.  However, when I began to type in the password field, a warning popped up that the data I was entering was not secure and, when I looked, sure enough, the site address was not secure.  At this point I ran into a Catch 22: I couldn't access the internet to research whether or not the Netgear Genie screen was legitimate without completing the questionable data entry in order to gain access to the internet!

Since I'm posting here, I obviously bowed to the inevitable and entered the insecure security data, but I'd like to know where the Genie came from, why I'm seeing it for the first time in 2 years and 7 months, and whether or not my data security has been compromised.

  • Shouldn't be any cause for concern. I've seen the default configuration change from being able to use default login info to requiring a change. Could be it just took your isp this long to push it out

why not just log in through the browser and set it up?

Its pretty common for the default password to be required to be changed. If there was firmware pushed out from the ISP for that, more than likely thats causing it.

You could always just factory reset and run through the install wizard.

I may be confused, but I'm not sure what you mean by "just log in through the browser."  What opened was a Firefox browser window that showed an insecure connection, and no other tabs were functional because I didn't have internet access.  I wish I'd thought to save screenshots of the addresses and windows I encountered, but I've attached the relevant portion of the browser history in case it's helpful.

did you try using its ip address?

192.168.0.1 is default for router side.

        modem should be 192.168.100.1
