Nighthawk CAX30 modem stopped working router still fine
Would it be likely that just the modem portion of this device would fail? The router works fine, but the downstream light flashes while the upstream and internet indicators are dark.
We just had Xfinity out to check the cable and the signal is strong. The tech suggested that it could be that a power surge took it out, or damaged the power supply. We didn’t experience a power outage when it stopped working. Seems like that would have taken out the router too….,
Are there any other explanations for why this modem might suddenly not work? I am sort of hesitant to replace it with the same brand given this failure.

Possible.
Has a factory reset been performed and setup from scratch. Might try this with the ISP coax cable disconnected then re-connect it after about 1 minute.
Can you provide the following from the modem? Please post a copy and paste of the modems connection status and event log page.

1) If you still see this message after 5 minutes, make sure coaxial cable is tightly connected.
2) Inspect the splitters. Remove any unnecessary splitters or replace it with a new one.
3) Use a different coaxial cable if available and connect directly without the splitter. Also, check if service is on this line.
4) If you still can't resolve the problem, contact your service provider for troubleshooting help.

All zero below that. Since I already did a reset, it cleared the old data- FURRYe38Guru - Experienced User
So no visible data down below that has power and correctables and such on the page?
With the ISP cable coax disconnected from the modem along with all other ethernet devices, try a 30-30-30 reset on the modem. Use a stop watch or timer to time the 30 second presses:
With the router plugged in and powered on, depress the reset button for 30 seconds. This button is usually a tiny dot recessed into the back of the modem. You may need a jeweler's screwdriver or a bent paperclip to access it.
While still holding down the button, unplug the modem from its power source for another 30 seconds.
With the reset button still held down, turn the power back on and hold for another 30 seconds.

I did several hard resets but not with the coax unplugged. I can try that. - RosieDotsAspirantTried factory reset with coax unplugged. Same result.
