Question regarding Netgear Nighthawk Modem/Router combo with Spectrum service

Hello all!

First post and I'm quite perplexed about a situation that has happened to me.

I recently bought a house and had to frantically set up internet so that I might still be able to work from home rather than going into the office. However, my Nighthawk AC1750 WiFi Modem/Router (C6300v2) cannot have it's firmware changed/updated to the Spectrum approved firmware version (current firmware V1.03.04) V1.02.09 through NetGear OR Spectrum. The technician from Spectrum specified that I would have to contact Netgear to update my firmware since they don't own the modem/router, and Netgear support said that Spectrum would have to update the firmware.

Will this cause issues with my internet connectivity while I am working from home, gaming, or streaming? What solutions can you all offer to me? I originally purchased a router but then realized my mistake of not purchasing a modem, much to my dismay. Thanks in advance!

  • Gateways (modem+router combo's) are usually updated by the ISP. NETGEAR sends the firmware to them and they have to test & certify it. Many ISPs don't do it as it costs time and money so you'll rarely see a firmware upgrade from the ISP. It's not the end of the world if the current firmware functions as it should

As microchip8 says, the firmware on your cable modem is in the hands of the ISP. Anyone there who tells you to contact Netgear doesn't understand how their own network operates.

The problem you have stumbled upon is why experienced users like to buy separate modems and routers.

The modem is not that complicated a device in comparison with routers. There isn't much to update on the modem but, but you can do plenty of things on a router, like adding new services and implementing security updates.

Buying a standalone router also offers a much bigger range of features than those modem/router combinations.

Should you feel the urge to get a grown up router the good news is that your modem/router can work as a modem only box. Just disable router mode.

You do not need to update your modem/router to get it to work on a different service. As long as it is compatible with the network.

What you should do is reset the C6300v2 – to forget its earlier settings – and configure it from scratch on the new service.
