R6350 router won't connect to Xfinity/Comcast Modem

I bought an AC1750 Smart WiFi Router, Model R6350. I have tried to use the Nighthawk app to install it. The app give me an "wire not connected" error or something like that. I can see the Netgear router in my Wireless Network Connections but when I login with the network key it won't connect.

I saw on the community board where someone accessed the router interface and ran a "test" which fixed their issue. I can't get the interface to come up on my laptop with an ethernet connection.

I also ran a diagnostic test on the Xfinity modem and it tested fine. Any advice? Thanks

What, exactly, is your (unspecified) "Xfinity/Comcast Modem"?  Is it
a simple modem, or a modem+router?  Why are you connecting the R6350 to
    it?

I'd forget the app, and stick with a web browser.  Visit
http://netgear.com/support , put in your model number, and look for
Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.

Thanks for the helpful link.  I've seen many things "on the community
board", not all of equal value.

"can't" is not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
    descriptions or interpretations.

Not much meat on that bone, either.

Sorry to disappoint you. You could have just asked the questions without the lecture. Congratulations on being an expert.

I could, at the risk of having even more of my time wasted in dealing
with still more information-free (non-)descriptions, where actual
        information is required.

But thanks for providing all those answers in round two.  Simplifies
        my job.

Factory reset the modem by pressing the back reset button for 15 seconds then release. Wire connect your PC to the back of the modem. Use a web browser, IE11 or Firefox and walk thru the setup wizard at 192.168.0.1. This should help you get the modem setup. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks Furry. I couldn't get my laptop to recognize the etheret connection from the modem. My modem is a Cisco DPC3939 and is fairly old. I think I'm going to take the router back and exchange it for a modem/router combo unit. Then I would have to worry about this anymore. I appreciate the response. Thanks.
