Two laptops + switch: Always worked, now it doesn't

Hi,

We have two laptop computers, a Mac and a PC. They both connect via Ethernet to a switch (NetGear GS105) and the switch is connected to a modem (no WiFi).

For several months now, both computers shared the same internet connection without any problem. Now all of the sudden, I can connect only one or the other or neither, but not both.

Time Warner Cable told me that the problem is with the Switch and NetGear are telling me that I need to use a router and not a switch.

No one can answer the question: How can it be that both computers worked fine all this time and now they don't.

If anyone here can help me get both computers up to the net without spending more money on a router, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Were you previously getting two IP addresses from TWC? Most ISPs will only give you one address unless you pay extra.  Perhaps TWC recently discovered that they were giving you two and revoked one of them.  In any case, Netgear is probably correct on this one.  You need a router.  Is the modem a pure modem or a modem/router?

It's a pure modem - one Ethernet socket.

I'm not sure. I can only assume that I had just one IP address.
