Why does ISP get to control my modem/router?

I bought this modem/router myself, why does my ISP get to decide when it updates? To the point where the update button is missing. I bought this router to get away from them doing that with the equipment I was leasing from them, I don't want them controlling my property.

The reason why is that they partition your modem for a specific speed that you pay for. This is through the firmware/software controlling the device.  Otherwise to many could manually enter the modem software and set it for gig service when they're only paying for 100mbps.  Unfortunately in the modem/router combo device, its integrated so they control both.  Maybe in the future, a company will develop a combo device that has the router firmware seperate from the modem but not currently.

To get away from this, you need to purchase a modem and router separate.  If you just bought the C7000, you can return it and purchase a modem seperate from the router.

       DOCSIS.

Cable-TV architecture does not physically isolate customers from each
other, so loss of control over firmware could cause a serious security
problem.  The concern over customer-equipment MAC addresses stems from
    the same source.

If you get a separate modem and router, then only the modem firmware
is similarly restricted, not the router firmware.

Get DSL or fiber service?  Don't connect your modem to your ISP's
    network?
