If the Mac upstairs is on the same electrical circuit as the powerline kit, then wireless does not have to come into it.
I have the same setup with the XWNB5201. I have added all manner of different plugs to it. They don't have to be the same speed, or even the same make.
At the moment I have a XAVB5201 pair. But that is one of many Netgear bundles that force you to buy a pair of plugs. The XAVB5421 pass through plug comes as a single. If you think you might need an extra network socket, there may be one available with a pair of LAN outputs.
