XAVNB2001 Won't Connect to Verizon Galaxy S4

I set up the Netgear Powerline Adapter in my bedroom a year and a half ago, and it has worked perfectly well, without problem at all. I use it to bring WiFi to this part of our house that is far from the Cisco E4200 Router.

I connect easily with my Verizon Galaxy Nexus, my wife's previous Motorola Droid 3, and my Asus Infinity Tablet.

My wife now has a new Verizon Galaxy S4 (Android 4.2.2, same as my phone), and while the Phone sees the Netgear Adapter's SSID, and shows a strong signal, when I put in the passcode (same encryption and settings as my Galaxy Nexus), it shows "Acquiring IP", attempts this twice, and then gives up, sayiing:
"Network Disabled Because Internet Connection Is Slow."

And it isn't slow - with the other devices, my speeds are as good as when I'm connected to the main WiFi at the Router itself.

I have posted a message at XDA's Verizon Galaxy S4 forum as well, but we still haven't cracked the problem. I have tried setting the Router to give the S4 a Static IP. I then tried the Phone with DHCP, or with Static IP, inputting the appropriate DNS servers. It then connects quickly to the router, but won't connect to the internet (possible DNS or other connection problem).

I know that Netgear people will blame the phone, and they could well be right, but I thought I'd post here to see if anybody has any suggestions on where the problem might be arising, what settings I might try, etc.

The phone connects perfectly well to the Router directly, but runs into a problem when accessing it through the Netgear WiFi adapter.

Any ideas???

Thanks.

  • No ideas? Any Netgear personnel here? Would love to get this fixed.

  • Thank you. Given the popularity of the Galaxy S4, I wondered if others might have encountered this odd problem. I have submitted a formal ticket to Netgear using your link. Thanks.
  • DLCPhoto,

Did you try to manually add the Wi-Fi Network of the XAVNB2001 to your S4?

You can also try resetting the XAVNB2001 and reconnect your S4.

As part of the Trouble-shooting I have updated the Firmware of the XAVN2001, and followed this by a factory reset. The assigned SSID is seen by the S4, and then I manually enter the passcode. This seems to be accepted, as it does not generate an error message about password, and it then tries to Acquire an IP. It is at this stage where it fails.

I have been working with Netgear on a ticket, and they have tested it on a GSM Galaxy S4, where it apparently works, but they said they don't have a Verizon S4 to test it with. I am still waiting to hear back from them after my latest report to them.

For what it's worth, here are 3 screen captures showing what I see on my phone as it attempts to connect ("Bedroom" is the SSID for the XVN2001):

As I've said before, I have no problems connection with multiple other devices:
    Verizon Samsung Galaxy Nexus
    Verizon Motorola Droid 3
    Verizon Motorola Razr HD
    Asus Infinity Tablet TF700T

    Very frustrating.
  • Verizon is now providing an OTA update to the Galaxy S4. Although WiFi fixes are not apparently listed as part of this update, I found that immediately after successfully completing the update that I could now connect properly with the XAVN2001. I already had this connection on the phone set for a static IP, and this is working fine. I haven't experimented with going back to the original DHCP setting, but wanted to at least report that this was a Verizon quirk with the S4, which apparently is now fixed.
  • DLCPhoto,

It's good to know that your problem with the S4 is now resolved and it's not a problem with the XAVN2001 but a problem with Verizon.
