The access list would make it harder to log in, but any transmissions could be easily read, so I hope that you don't send any private stuff via the WiFi.
I got the impression that the WPA/WPA2 issue was to do with the router not the AP or Extenders. There are custom firmwares available for the DGND3700 now. I haven't played with them so I don't know if they would be of use to yourself.
The one I am thinking of (DG-WRT) is normally only for cable routers. This might not be suitable if you are using an ADSL connection.
