Finally we have a solution!!! :D
Netgear have finally replaced my DGND3700 with a DGND3700v2 and all of my problems have gone.
Both units now connect perfectly WITH security on BOTH bands. Looks like the issue was with the crappy v1.
I suggest anyone with this issue gets onto Netgear and get them to replace your v1 with a v2. It may take them a year to look after you, but that's Netgear for you.
