N300 Range extended limited speed

Hi everyone, I recently setup the N300 Wifi Range extender. Connection is very good between the extender and my Wifi Router. I have the N300 plugged into a Netgear 1 GB 5 port hub and my other devices plugged into that. Best speed I'm getting is only 20MBS. My router has a 300MBS connection and devices connected directly to it run at that speed. Any ideas what might be going on?

  • After researching it appears it's the WPA2 security that's limiting the speed. I do not see where the N300 will let you change the WPA security. Looked through the Manual and online and there's no Security Settings option on the N300 settings page.

If the extender is extending the host wifi signal, the extender just passes on the security mode set by the host router.

N300 extenders are extremely slow (and old tech). that 20-30mbps is about all you're going to get from one over wifi.
If you're wanting/needing faster speeds, you'd need to upgrade.

What speeds do you pay for?

What speeds do you want/need from the extender?

Appreciate the reply. Yes after spending all morning with it, way too much time, I finally ordered a new TP Link AC1900. The comments online suggest that you have to adjust the WPA2 security setting and says you can find it under the Wifi Settings on the N300 landing page. Nope, it does not exist!

That probably only applies if the N300 was in AP mode. Extender mode has to follow what is set on the host router.
