Please help me with my access point setup :(

Hi

I have a BT Business broadband router 2wire i think its called. I also have a netgear WG102 access point, i want to connect the two so i can pick up wireless internet from the access point. This is what i have tried so far.. I havent changed anything on the BT router and not sure if im supposed to? i plugged the netgear into my laptop and browsed to the interface at 192.168.0.254. Within here i have tried all sorts of things, starting by giving the netgear an ip address 192.168.1.*** becuase the BT routers IP address is 192.168.1.*** i have also tried setting the default gateway address to the ip address of the BT router. I have also added the BT routers MAC address to the "Access Point" section on the access point setup screen. Nothing i try is getting internet through the netgear!! i can see the netgear in my wireless list and can connect to it, but then it tells me its got limited or no connectivity. What am i doing wrong??? i cant find any decent instructions anywhere and the net gear instructions are very vague.:(

Ok I understand now what you're trying to do. Yes if you want the AP to be a repeater you will need the wireless security types to be the same with the same SSID and password and as the WG102 doesn't support WPA2 in wireless bridging mode you will have to set the 2wire's security to WEP which if you're in a coporate environment might not be a great idea as WEP is not secure enough anymore.

For more info see this link: http://documentation.netgear.com/wg102/enu/202-10144-01/WG102-6-12.html

It sounds like you have already entered the MAC address of the 2wire into the netgear (should be in the parent AP section) as well as an IP address so all you should need to do is create a WEP security profile on the 2wire and use the same settings and key in the netgear's security profiles so they can "talk" to each other. The DNS server address should be the same as the 2wire's IP address if you haven't already.

Let me know how you get on

Thank you this has helped me loads!!! i was reluctant to change the security on the 2wire to WEP just becuase then i will need to reconnect all devices afterwards. Im not in a corporate setting this is at my own home, i am testing it for my brother who also has a 2wire in a pub where he gets signal downstairs but not up. I will try what you have suggested shortly and let you know what happens. Are you saying that the DNS address on the AP needs to be the same address as the 2wire iteself e.g 192.168.1.254?

Why is WEP less secure? i mean you still have to enter a code so its not like anyone can just connect. Would you say its a bad idea to have WEP if you have neighbours close by?

I already tried changing the SSID on the AP to the same as the 2wire, all this seemed to do was change the name in my available wireless networks list so i had two BT Business Hubs listed, instead of one BT hub and one NetGear AP??
  • The reason I said WEP is less secure is that it is now an old security standard and can be easily "cracked" by someone if they wish to do so, however in a home environment that shouldn't be an issue as the attacker would need to have the right software and have a reason to attack your network. If all you're doing is making sure your neighbour is not using your internet connection for free then its OK.

I must confess its a long time since I have used wireless repeating so a lot of my instructions are from memory or a general informed guess so please bear with me

Yes the DNS on the AP needs to be the same as the 2wire (this assumes the netgear is NOT getting its IP settings via DHCP from the 2wire)

The SSID, password and security type all need to be the same on both access points and if memory serves me right they need to be on the same channel too so turn off auto channel if it's enabled. (I think this is why you are seeing two access points in your computer)
Also turn off auto RF managment (if your netgear has it) under advanced wireless settings as it may be conflicting with the 2wire

    So quick IP summary:
    2wire IP address 192.168.1.254

netgear access point IP address 192.168.1.(whatever number, but not 254)
    Default gateway: 192.168.1.254
    DNS server: 192.168.1.254
    Subnet mask 255.255.255.0

this is with DHCP client disabled on the netgear. If its not this should be filled in automatically.

MAC address of the 2wire entered into the parent AP boxes in the Repeater with Wireless Client Association menu

    Hope this helps.

you don't need to do this if your installing WG to 2wire with ethernet cable.

I believe that the access point is standalone and not connected with an ethernet cable, hence needing repeater mode
