Modem and router (R6400) appear to be working but I can't connect to the internet

I'm setting up the modem (Arris Surfboard SB6190) and router (Netgear AC1750 model R6400) in our home. Both appear to be working. On the modem, the online, send, and receive buttons are on. On the router, the internet, 2.4GHz, 5GHz, wifi, and WPS buttons are on. The network status on my laptop says it's connected to the wifi, but when I try accessing the internet through any browser, I get a page saying there's no internet.
Any idea what might be going on? Thanks!

  • Did you power them up in correct order?

    - Shut off both modem & router and wait half a minute or so.
    - Power up modem only and wait for it to fully boot/stabilize
    - Power up the router and wait a few minutes to fully initialize

Still no internet? If so, does your router show and IP address on its WAN interface?

I just tried powering them up as you suggested, but unfortunately it didn't seem to work.
I'm not seeing an IP address on the router's WAN interface. But I logged into my Netgear app and clicked on router settings, and I do see an IP address listed there!

Basic question, have you activated your new SB6190 with your cable internet provider?

What do the LED indicators on the front of your modem show.  The bottom one is for internet, is it illuminated?  This should be one of the last indicators to come on as part of the boot process.

When started in sequence, does the internet LED indicator on your R6400 illuminate?  This should be one of the last indicators to come on as part of the boot process.

Is it only the laptop that will not connect?

    Is t just the browser?

Is it connected by wifi or by wired LAN?

Windows likes to protect us from new networks that might be evil. In  reality, it often shuts us out of safe networks.

One thought is that you could tell Windows that you are on a "private network".

    • Network and Internet settings

    • Change Connection Properties
