R6400 Will Not Boot

So the Wife and I have started exploring thrift/antique stores. While she dug through hosuewares I went to the electronics section. I found an R6400 that appeared almost new. I powered the unit. It booted and WiFi came up. My phone confirmed this. $15 later I had an R6400.

At home I was able to open the web interface. I nosed around a little. There was a notice that an upgrade was available. I held the reset button to default the unit to factory. This went well. A little later the power light went amber. I'll deal with this tomorrow!

Well today it will not boot. At power-on the power light flashes followed by a bright flash of the internet,(red) and ethernet,(pink) lights. Afterward there is a dim amber power with both WiFi and USB1 dim white.

Can someone please help me troubleshoot this router?

  • I may come back to this later. For now, I quit. The purpose of this router was to set up a VPN gateway. I have ordered a WNR3500Lv2.

I have had a 3500Lv1 in service for 9 years with great results. The v1 will be repurposed for for VPN using DDWRT firmware.

    Thanks for the help.

The instructions for the Win10 version of TFTP requires using the Power LED. Mine never comes on like it is described.

I can't get a good PING reply using the default IP address. I will try again later. I do get a good light when the PC is connected to the router so maybe I have a $15 Gbit switch.

Actual command?  Actual result?  Copy+paste is your friend.  "using"
which "the default IP address" where?  Does your Windows system get a
good IP configuration from the (DHCP server in the) router?  If not,
then did you configure it with a suitable static address?  (What?)

        > [...] I do get a good light when the PC is connected to the router

Which "a good light"?  As usual, showing actual actions with their
actual results (error messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful
        than vague descriptions or interpretations.

        > [...] maybe I have a $15 Gbit switch.

That's possible.  Perhaps the previous owner shed the thing for a
        good reason.

There is the more "severe" reset procedure:

    • Press reset for 30 seconds
    • Keep pressing reset while removing power
    • Keep pressing reset for another 30 seconds while apply power

I would also investigate the possibility that the power supply is defective in some way. Look for something with the same volts and (+/-) polarity and enough amps.

      Michael,

I have tried the reset several times as suggested. I also tried a 1A power supply. 1A should power this thing static and does without getting hot. The result was the same.

        > [...] Is the ability to PING required for TFTP to work?

"ping" is a very low-level communication test.  If it fails, then I
wouldn't expect much else to work, including TFTP.

If the normal restart and/or reset operations leave the gizmo in some
abnormal/confused  state, and I were desperate, then I might try the
TFTP command at different stages in the start-up procedure, in the
(dim?) hope of catching it in a receptive state.

I know nothing, but I've read of people who claim to connect to an
internal serial port, which may allow some access to a more-than-usually
crippled device.  A Web search may find examples.
