Router R6400 loses wired (ethernet) conection Firmware V1.0.2.34_1.0.22

Hello

I bought this router a few days ago after I had a similair prolbem with another router I tried (Tp-link archer c2 v1). I returned the Archer due to being unstable and having a lot of the bindwith and speeds shifting up and down quite badly and it was cutting internet connection for brief moments at random. After I retuerned it I got this Netgear R6400. I noticed the stability was amazing (honestly haven't had a more stable connection). But the problem with the losing conection continued. And it is even more intense. Weird thing is If I try my stock ISP provided router (which is junk) I don't have this problem. The conncetion never drops.

So I searched far and wide on the internet for why I might have this router and didn't really find a solution. No one seems to have found a solution even tho they have a similair problem.

-My firmware is up to date, pretty much the last version that the netgear genie managed to find. I made sure it is installed correctly by stopping any programs on my computer that requires internet conncection. (except the browser ofcourse)
-I am absolutely sure it is not the cables, because they are new and high quality.
-Changing ports on the router with the cable doesn't help the interent cuts on all 4 of the ports I can plug my computer in.
-I am using optical internet 100mb/s (will upgrade to 300 or 500 later).
-Wi-Fi doesn't drop at all when I have this problem with my computer.

I doubt the issue is from my ISP, tho it is still possible.

I also read that the problem might be occuring because of some security features the router is providing.

And another hint I can give is, that it most often it occures when I am Gaming/Streaming.

I will be really thankful if anyone here knows a solution to this problem. I read somewhere that if I make my MTU's to match can fix the issue but it seems way too difficult for me to try that and I am a bit scared I might mess this up.

  • To anyone with similair problems.

Here is what fixed this problem for me.

1: I contacted my ISP they, looked into the router and did something on their end to ensure stability to their servers.
2: I updated my Lan port drivers. First I updated the drivers of my lan version that didn't seem to do anything but then I went to device manager, under network adapters, I right clicked my adapter and opened the properties. Under the properties window, I clicked on Driver. And then clicked Update driver. That massively decreased the problems occurance but didn't fix it.
3: Since it didn't fix the problem, I got mad. (that step is really important, trust me :D ) Then I took a pen, and clicked the reset button on the back of the modem (hold for 7-10 seconds to work). Didn't think it will fix anything but it has been like 3 days now and I haven't had the problem since (had it every few hours).

I looked far and wide for a solution to my problem and I didn't find anything anywhere. I really hope this can help someone. Network problems are frustrating and certanly tricky to fix. Really happy I managed to solve my issue.

      Hello dexter.

The firmware version is as stated in the Title of the thread (V1.0.2.34_1.0.22)
Reseting the router is just a temporary fix, and has been done many times.

It rarely drops during browsing, since I am constantly streaming videos down and up at twitch and browing al the time. But the conection Is droping usually when I start gameing. Like 10 minutes into the game it starts going off and on again and again for about 20 secounds. Then the conection stables up.

I just changed the MTU to 1472 which seems to be the maximum. I guess I didn't see that setting while I was going trough the genie.
I will definetly let you know if that Fixes anything.

But if you by any chance have any idea why the problem triggers 10 minutes in an online game and how to fix it. I would be really thankful!

Aaand just as I was about to send this message the problem occured again... on normal browsing...

      Thanks in advance. V.L.

        Hello again DexterJB

I just noticed that every time I lower the MTU size to what was the previous that managed to send the date without fragmentation. For example I lowered it to 1472. After I saved the changes and tried pinging again with 1472 it said that it needs to be fragmented again, while on the first tests that was the value that got accepted. So now I lowered it to 1442 and it is the same problem...

Is this a normal behaviour for MTU size change?
