FYI, uPNP Port forwarding has Nat Loopback issues with DDNS... Use manual entering of ports instead

To anyone trying to access devices on your network via DDNS...

Using uPNP for automatic port forwarding is resulting in DDNS failure behind the router, although devices can be connected outside the network.

For instance, I have a Synology server, set up on my network, using xxx.synology.me:9999 as the ddns / port for accessing the server.

Using upnp to set up ports, I could never access the server from inside the network, but it works fine accessing it outside the network.

The way to resolve this, is to manually set up the port forwarding on the Netgear router. This has resulted in proper NAT loopback, allowing me to access xxx.synology.me:9999 from inside the network as well as from outside the network.

    Interesting work around.

Possible that NAT loopback isn't supported on RS series, however not sure.

As per the following article, all Nighthawk routers support NAT Loopback.

  • FYI: uPNP with DDNS can cause NAT Loopback issues. It's better to set ports manually for a stable connection.

All NETGEAR routers support NAT loopback. If it's a loopback issue, manual port-forwarding setup should also have the issue.

gramwilliams , what is your router model ?

    • This was not my experience. UPNP Created loopback issues, which then went away when I manually port-forwarded...

What model router do you have?

  • FYI, uPNP port forwarding can cause NAT loopback problems with DDNS. It’s better to manually enter port forwarding settings to avoid these issues.

Why did you just repeat everything I wrote in my post? Are you trying to get someone to mark it as a solution?  Do imaginary internet points mean that much to you?

    Hi SteelerNights ,

Thanks for sharing the issue here. We were able to reproduce the issue and have fixed it. I just PM you the link for the trial firmware that fixes the issue. Would you like to give it a try and let me know if it works for you. Thank you.

    • That sounds good, but since the link is not connected at all with Netgear, I don't feel good installing anything that doesn't come directly from Netgear servers.

Anything that comes from the NG Experts can be trusted. Sometimes they need to use external or public accessble storage so users can access special builds or files. These don't necessarily require using NG specific servers as there maybe security reason not too or Experts can not use NG servers.
