IPv6 is not supported in RS300

After many hours of support calls I was told IPv6 is only supported on the WAN side of the router, and not on the LAN side. Despite showing ICMPv6 makes it through to my end device on the wired LAN port, the RS300 blocks all IPv6 packets to any local UDP/TCP port. I believe the real story is that it is meant to work with IPv6 filtering set to open (as opposed to secure), but there is a bug in the firmware preventing proper operation. Rather than fixing the defect, they just state it is not supported on this residential grade router. This is not clearly stated in the product documentation prior to purchase.

    The Windows command ipconfig /all will show information about the network interfaces.  My computer, for example shows this:

    If I do ICMP with IPv6, I get this:

    If you try that on a computer connected to the RS300 what happens?

    It might be helpful to understand the goal.  i.e. what you are trying to do.

  • I have a public routable IPv6 address that I can ping from anywhere in the world. The problem is that I cannot expose UDP/TCP services to the outside world due to the RS300 blocking all IPv6 packets from arriving at my devices sitting on the LAN. I have proven the packets arrive from the cable modem to the router's WAN side interface via Wireshark, but that is where they stop. The router will not forward unsolicited IPv6 packets even with its setting for "IPv6 Filtering" set to "open". Clearly a bug.

      If you put a device in the router DMZ, will the IPv6 packets reach that device?

    ALL NG routers support IPv6 WAN AND LAN side. Been like this for years.

     

    What Firmware version is currently loaded?
    What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too? 

    Check and see if protection engine feature is seen on the RS web page please.

        And you did confirm having IPv6 with a PC directly connected to the ISP modem with out the RS router?

        What PC OS platform are you using? 

        Which ISP are you connected with? 

  • I own many Netgear products, but was disappointed in the customer service I received regarding this issue. I realize I had a very specific need that the product does not support, but it should not have taken several hours of my time, spent talking via chat and phone to NG techs, to reach this conclusion. In the end, I had to move forward by purchasing an ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro router that fully supports IPv6 to LAN clients. Now I am up and working.

    Agreed.  One would think the User Manual should include a brief comment, "Does not forward incoming IPv6 connections to LAN devices."

     

    It was an interesting learning experience.
