RS500 - Higher ping times to router than my previous router R6700AX

I am consistently getting ping times of 3ms or higher from a nearby laptop to the router over wifi. The same ping times with my previous router R6700AX is only 1 ms or lower from the same location and the same 5 Ghz band channel settings. The number of connected clients or network activity didn't change in both cases.

The pings to the router over a wired connection is as expected and less than 1 ms.

Do the Netgear wifi 7 routers in general have higher ping times to the router over wifi?

  • Can't find v22.150 anywhere to try?

Just tested my RS600 here and getting same thing on a AX210 adapter PC on 5Ghz:

I had to disable Smart Connect to force my adapter to 5Ghz as it kept connecting at 6Ghz. I didn't test 6Ghz.

I'll pass this to NG and see if this is something acceptable and if there is any suggestions or information. May need some tuning in FW.

  • I marked this issue as resolved since this high ping issue appears to be present in all the RS series Wi-Fi 7 routers.

So some info about this from NG. New routers may see glightly lower time results. All this depends on wifi environment, conditions and yes, newer generation routers are doing more processing and some have an extra layer of security which may impact what is seen at the pingging client side. The ping times we are seeing are not high. Just low and considering all thats going on between the router and client side wifi device, these times may not be zero compared to older generation wifi routers which may not have had the extras that new gen stuff has. As long as the times are not extremely high or constantly high all the time, we can focus on good operation and performances and looking foward past the router and if issues are seen, should look at and vette them out there.

I did some checking with a Orbi system and seeing similar times there as well. Seems to be the nature of the beast and wifi. Why I still like ethernet. Nice and quiet there.

Thank you sharing the update from NG and also doing more testing with the orbi. This makes sense. As long as the pings are within limits and consistent, I am good.

Thank you for testing and passing this issue along to NG. Looks like this is a FW issue only with the WIFI 7 routers. I can't find the specific Intel driver 22.150 version, windows auto updates the driver after removing the current driver.

Have you checked Intel's site for histical driver availability?

What is the model # of the wireless adapter in the laptop?

    Drivers updated?

How far from the router is the laptop?

What channels are you using on the new router?

Is IPv6 and Protection Engine enabled on the router?

What is the brand and model# of the ISP modem/ONT that the router is connected too?

    Any Wifi neighbors near by?

Same thing happen with a different wifi device or latop?

How far from the router is the laptop? Around 8 ft

What channels are you using on the new router? Channel 44 set to 5.8 Gbps speed (changed channel to 161 to check, no change in ping was observed)

Is IPv6 and Protection Engine enabled on the router? IPV6 enabled, PE disabled (disabled ipv6 to check, no change in ping was observed)

What is the brand and model# of the ISP modem/ONT that the router is connected too? Hitron Coda 56 modem

Any Wifi neighbors near by? Yes, same wifi noise as with my old router

Same thing happen with a different wifi device or latop? Yes latency seemed to increase 4-5 ms from my android phone too when doing speed tests
