RS700 Horrible Bufferbloat...
Hi all,
Was wondering if maybe there is a way to fix the bufferbloat caused by this router while gaming? The QOS is awful, tried that, limited download even and upload.. still got a F on Waveform bufferbloat test. I realize I really screwed up buying this as a competitive gamer, and realize now this is not remotely a gaming router. For some reason it showed up on Amazon search as a gaming router. Ive already disabled armor, turned off flow, but I think I am in between a rock and a hard place. I can not find any alternative firmware with real sqm, or any firmware for that matter. Was curious if there is a way to get beta updated firmware? I am not sure what to do, I hate to eat a $600 dollar waste, but its looking like that is my only alternative. I knew I should have bought an ASUS. I am a dummy.

Just fired my RS600 back up to re-test it after your post. From about 60ft away on 5ghz wireless and running through a triple nat (testing other devices) and it still got a B on bufferbloat. Its going opnsense router (running unbound DNS)---->8 port 2.5gig switch---->RBK773------>RS600. All running muligig just to test.

How fast is your ISP speed? Congestion on the WAN uplink is what couses the buffering.
Though counter-intuitive, try using one of the 1 gbps LAN ports.

What is the brand and model# of the ISP modem the RS router is connected too?

What firmware version are you on?
Try connecting the PC to the RS700 and then entering the PC's IP address into the DMZ on the router.

Sorry, meant reboot the router after disabling qos.

- You have packet loss when plugged directly into the modem? You shouldn't.
- If you have 1 gig service, disable qos. Then reboot the modem. Sometimes a reboot helps clear things out.
- Make sure any parental controls, access controls, netgear Armor, or VPN's are disabled. They cause traffic inspection and increase buffer bloat.
- Since setup, have you tried a simple factory reset and testing it from default? I don't have the RS700 but I have the RS600 and its scoring a A on bufferbloat with both my wireless device and wired PC.
- Is the PC you're using hardwired or wireless?

No. If I am hardwired (and yes my PC is hardwired) into the modem directly, 0 problems, A bufferbloat test, 0 packet loss, and my games run smooth as butter. If I plug into the router, armor is off, access control is off, qos is off, no VPN, and I have factory reset multiple times. I am assuming they put better firmware on the RS600... Netgear has really gone downhill for the competitive gaming scene. I actually believed this would at the very least do what is advertised, but it doesn't. The firmware needs completely reworked, the QOS needs an update from 2023.. like seriously, thats crazy. I have never regretted buying a product, ever, as much as I regret buying this future paperweight. My wife is not a very happy camper that I have to plug directly into the modem and she doesn''t get wifi when I am playing for money. I literally bought a $600 dollar paperweight.

- What modem do you have?
- What are you gaming on?
- Is your gaming device hardwired or wireless? (it should always be hardwired if you're a competitive gamer, wireless adds latency)
- what speeds do you pay for?
- QOS isn't all its cracked up to be with some of these consumer devices. If you're competitive gamer and making money off it, invest in an Intel N150 minipc with 2.5 gig or higher ports and install opnsense or pfsense to it. They offer much more customized tuning than any of the consumer equipment. Then just connect a router to it in access point mode to use the router for wireless.

I have the Spectrum 1 gig modem/plan (its brand new), if I plug straight into modem... I have 0 bufferbloat. I also have packet loss if I am plugged into the modem, and I am hardwired. QOS on the RS700 is absolutely worthless, that gives me a insta F rating on bufferbloat test. I am gaming on a 4090, 149000kf, 64 gig ram, pc. I have run several tracert and pathping.. this router sucks, I have tried plugging into 1,2,3,4,LAN.. flow control off, flow control on, tried the 10gbps... this router is awful. Im ready to pitch it in the trash and pickup a ->
