Was believed at some point the NG would introduce MESH features to the RS series. I believe this was side lined and was no longer being worked on.
Are you seeing this hidden network coming from your unit?

THe network is locked and not accessible to anyone. Same for Orbi systems. Seen there as well however only used by the wifi system and not accessible to users.
Its possible NG has forgotten to disable it in the RS FW.

I don't know what source code you analyzed, but even if it is Netgear's open source it won't be complete.
This should be easy for Netgear to fix. But I think it is unlikely that they will make it a priority.
