To all that have replied and offered assistance. The issue has been resolved. it had to be resolved by support logging into my NAS remotely and was related to the device not being able to reach the proper repository due to accessability issue on their end. all is good now.
Thanks again for your kind assistance.

Are you getting the error when you check for the update?
If so, then manually download the update from https://kb.netgear.com/31116/ReadyNAS-OS-Version-6-5-2
Then extract the image from the zip file, and use the manual update function on system->settings to install it.
Or are you getting it when the system applies the update?
If this is the case, try rebooting the NAS, and then check the firmware version again.

actually getting errors both ways. when trying to do the file download and manual install it says unrecognized server error.

maybe a restart or clearing your cache works?
