Internet Usage
So the questionis how much internet usage occurs when I am communicating with the NAS device. If I am on local does it just go to the router and back And if I am on readyCloud what happens This...

FWIW, if you forget the NAS password you could write it down and tape it inside the door of the NAS. Though security experts here will cringe, the truth is that anyone with physical access to the NAS can reset the password with OS reinstall procedure mentioned above. So there isn't much additional risk.
If you are on your local network and not using readycloud, then your access should all be local.
ReadyCloud is supposed to detect if the NAS is local, and not route through the Netgear VPN servers in that case. But that might not always work. It might be safest to exit the ReadyCloud app on the PC when you are local.
What apps do you have running on the NAS?
The NAS will still connect to the internet for some tasks - for instance, updating the AV definitions, checking for updates, and syncing time with NTP servers. Bandwidth for those particular tasks won't be large. If you want to try shutting down internet access completely, then you can try going to the network tab, select the ethernet settings, then ipv4. Then delete all the DNS servers on the list. Perhaps disable IPv6 while you are on that settings page.
Thanks. Sounds like I better stay local. Now, if I could just figure out how to log in, that would be good. It just will not take any of the passwords I have tried. I don't want to reboot and lose my data.
