    Given the circumstances, the most likely cause is that the VPD, which is also in the flash memory, was also corrupted.  The VPD is an encrypted file unique to your NAS that tells the OS the unit type and serial number.  Without it, the OS thinks you are trying to run on non-Netgear hardware.  Only Netgear can create that encrypted file.  If you have access to another NVX unit, you can copy the VPD using the method here: Backup-and-restore-of-VPD-file-for-legacy-ReadyNAS-running-OS6 .  With Netgear no longer providing support, it won't matter that the serial number will be the same on two units.

     

    Note that this is not "a known side effect of USB recovery".  What's known is that when the flash gets messed up, the VPD may be affected, and USB recovery doesn't and can't repair it.
