Readycloud not playing avi and mkv files, only MP4
Hello, I am using an iPad 2 and readycloud with readynas but it won't play avi or mkv files. Mp4 files work absolutely fine but avi files just the QuickTime Q logo appears, it looks like it is trying to play an audio file but there is no sound and no images even though the timer is going.
the mkv files seem like they are downloading but then nothing happens. I have a mobile that seems to play them fine. I have tried reinstalling readycloud but that doesn't work.
Im afraid I am not the most technically astute but this is really annoying so any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
David.

I think your problem is because the ipad's built-in video player doesn't support avi or mkv - and readycloud uses that player.
What NAS do you own?

It is a readynas 104. the strange thing is that I was pretty sure it was working until the recent IOS upgrade...

is there a way using readynas with another video player such as vlc? I have this and 8player - I would create a VPN instead as I have heard that is one approach, but I have no idea how to do this or if it is possible?

There are two options that I think are worth trying next. Neither require ReadyCloud.
One is AVPlayerHD. It will play both AVI and MKV, and you can connect to it over the internet using FTP.
You could also try Plex. There is a free plex server app available for the RN104. The challenge here is that the RN104 isn't capable of real-time transcoding, which limits what you can play. Still, it is worth a try.
