Beta Tester Wanted (new Windows app for ReadyNAS)
Hi, all
I recently created a small Windows app for ReadyNAS series of NAS, which will let user to start, monitor and shutdown a ReadyNAS system from task tray.

It emulates RAIDar Protocol to retrieve information from the system as RAIDar.net by Pasadena and ReadyNAS Monitor by DotBlog do. I thank both of them for showing one can utilize RAIDar Protocol to get information directly from the system, but I want some more features:
I am testing this app with my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and Duo and it looks working fine. Thus, I want to know if it will work in other environment especially with other ReadyNAS systems like NV+, Ultra 4, Ultra 6 and so on.
So, I will appreciate it if someone take time to test it and report the result with the name of ReadyNAS system. Also, any comments or suggestions will be welcomed.
The Project Home: NAS Herder
(This app is developed by VB.NET and runs on Windows 7 and Windows XP (probably Windows Vista also) with .NET Framework 4.0 installed.)
Edit: Changed screenshot.

- Smaller space to monitor the system: This app indicates status of the system by color of task tray icon so as not to bother user as long as the system is running without problem. If something wrong happens to the system, this app will notify user instantly.
- Power off when the system is not needed: This app can make power on/off of the system synchronized with client PC so that the power consumption will be minimized. (This feature will be useless for heavy users who run their systems 24/7 though...)

- MastacheataAspirantSorry, totally missed to look for the tray.
There's probably no real benefit from having the jump list in that case.
Thanks for the quick reply. - emoachtAspirantReleased NAS Herder Ver.0.8.0.
Changes from Ver.0.6.0:- Changed all featured items (Disks, Volumes ...) to be shown separately.
- Changed temperature color scheme and each threshold of CPU, System and Disk to be customizable to reflect those status more precisely.
- Added Tweet function which lets user to monitor status of the system and send some commands via Twitter.
- Modified share function so that most results of RAIDar Protocol will be shared when running multiple NAS Herders.
- Deleted Curl function because RAIDar Protocol function and internal SSL function seem to be stable.
- Inserted waiting time before proceeding to start NAS when PC resumes to avoid mistakenly catching transition from suspend to hibernation.
- Fixed some bugs and unintended behaviors.
Since large part of internal code is rewritten, please expect unseen bugs. If you tested it with arm based systems (Duo V2 or NV+ V2), please let me know the result. It should work fine but not confirmed yet. - MED1975AspirantHi,
I have been trying out this application, using 0.8.3 and now 0.8.4. I have a ReadyNAS Duo (V1) and it is communication with NAS Herder, but I cannot get the shutdown command to work. I have confirmed the correct password is set up in the software. Any ideas what could be wrong? Is this function working for anyone else with the Duo?
Thanks
MED - gibxxiGuideWorking fine on my Ultra 4. I'd change the word "Care" to "Monitor" and add restart functionality alongside shutdown, so users can restart the NAS without having to see Frontview at all, aside from that, good work.
:)
EDIT: Shutdown functionality seems to be working ok for me, at least from the main window. Not tried it from the system tray icon. I would however also second the vote for a taskbar item, but when and only when the main window is open. - emoachtAspirantTo MED1975
Hmm... I tested shutdown with my Duo (V1, RAIDiator 4.1.10) and it worked fine.
1. Could you quickly check the password set in NAS Herder does not have any space at the beginning or at the end? ReadyNAS seems not allow spaces at the beginning or at the end of password. Spaces at the middle are okay.
2. Could you post log of NAS Herder related to shutdown command? To enable log, Settings --> Other --> Record on log file --> Actions (.txt). Then log file will be created in the folder where NasHerder.exe exists. I think you can find related part by time stamp. If sending shutdown command is successful, "<status>success</status>" will be included. - emoachtAspirantTo gibxxi
Thank you for your report.
1. I am not very sure whether "care" or "monitor" is appropriate. The reason I used "cared" in Scan Dialog is functions of NAS Herder include starting and shuting down as well as monitoring. I am flexible if there is any good alternative.
2. Adding restart functionality sounds interesting. BTW, I restart ReadyNAS only after changing some settings in FrontView. If you don't mind, let me know in what case you want ReadyNAS restarted without using FrontView?
3. Internally, shutdown functionality from main window and from task tray icon are identical. Both will fire the same code. So... could you explain more the reason of "but when and only when the main window is open"? - gibxxiGuideHi emoacht,
The use of the word "cared" is a bit confusing to me, and doubtless will be to others. Are you a native English speaker? To me the word "Monitor" (or monitored / monitoring) just fits better. You could also use the phrase "Scan For" or "Scanning For...", "Cared" just doesn't really fit for me grammar-wise.
The taskbar item was a seperate point to the shutdown functionality report. I would like to see a taskbar item when the app is open, and have it disappear when the app is minimized.
As for the reasoning behind adding reboot functionality, a lot of my add-ons are managed or administered in their own windows, and do not require frontview. Also sometimes I might be connected to the NAS via SSH/FTP and want to apply some changes. Sometimes if I reset my router, the NAS will not appear to the desktop until a reboot of either. It's just something handy to have, to not have to navigate through frontview just to reboot the NAS. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserNice little app (just downloaded it). As a native English speaker, I agree with gibxxi - "monitor" is better than "cared". If you have more functionality than shutdown, you could substitute "manage". But I don't think it does enough management yet to merit that name.
- emoachtAspirantThanks gibxxi and StephenB
1. As for "cared", I am not a native English speaker and so responses from native speakers are helpful to me. Maybe "monitored" will be enough. I will change it in next version.
2. And taskbar item, I got your point. Yeah, it is natural for a Windows app to show up in taskbar when it is open. I thought as long as task tray icon is shown, it will be enough to inform user of existence of the app. Let me think.
3. I understand the cases that restart functionality is needed. Adding a option to add "Restart" button will be a solution. Maybe in next version. - gibxxiGuideGreat app though emoacht. Totally replaces RAIDar for me. Nice work.
