Linux Commands to Mount USB Hard Drive

I have a very small knowledge of Linux and there lies my problem.

I would like to transfer some file from my ReadyNAS Pro 6 to a USB hard drive.  (Not using the backup button.)   The USB hard drive is connected to a USB port on the back of the Pro 6.  What Linux line commands do I need to find and then mount my hard drive?   What I've tried hasn't worked with most commands coming back with "not found".

Thanks.

I'm sure what is meant by "will show up on Volumes page."  Could mine be labeled as "Shares"

    This is what I have.

After using RAIDar to access the NAS I click on the "Admin Page" button and I login as "admin".

This then allows me to select "Shares".  This shows me the data on my NAS and also the data on the external USB hard drive.

So my NAS sees the USB hard drive attached.

When I go back to RAIDar and click on "Browse" I now have displayed an Explorer Window showing only the data on my NAS and no way to get to the external USB hard drive.

How do I get to the data on the external USB hard drive?

    Thanks.

Yes, it shows up on the shares page.  It should also show up on the volumes tab of the system page.

First go to "Shares" and click on the settings wheel for the external drive "share" and select settings. Select "Network Access" and make sure SMB is enabled.

Then skip RAIDar and directly enter \\nas-ip-address\sharename in the Explorer address bar - using the actual IP address and sharename, of course.  Be careful to use the correct slash - \ NOT /.

Note you can also copy/paste files from the shares page.

  • The ability to format a USB drive is in the GUI in OS4.2.x, but was left out of OS6.  I'm not sure why -- seems to me a huge oversight.  But if the drive is formatted as a single partition in one of the file systems an OS6 NAS supports (FAT32, NTFS, EXT, or BTRFS), the NAS should automatically mount it and then it will show up on the Volumes page.  Using your PC to format it as NTFS is usually the best solution. Just be sure to do a proper removal from the PC.

Log in as root (not admin) using the NAS admin password.

How is the USB drive formatted?

Is the NAS running 4.2.x firmware?  Or have you converted it to run OS-6?
