My conclusion is to not proceed with the attempt. 1 Safety concerns and 2 complexity.
I will safe up for a Synology and keep my Netgear 6-bay raid 10 as back up for how long it still keeps running

Be careful here.
You really don't want to forward the ports needed to access your shares with SMB. There are big security risks (opening up your files to everyone on the internet).
Opening up the admin page in your router also creates some risks. You can get hacked if you don't know how to set this up properly.
We are recommending a VPN because an encrypted VPN is much easier to set up securely.
