readyNas as a vpn relay

I have recently moved to a different country and left a ReadyNas server back home. I would like to use it as a VPN tunnel server, to be able to access streaming services as if i was in my home country.

unfortunately the packages on the readynas app page are not working. Any recommendations?

  • I was exploring my Orbi router settings and actually found I can set up the VPN there instead working as a relay. Thanks for your inputs!

  • Its a Linux box at heart, though an older version.  Via SSH, you can use apt-get to install standard Debian packages.

Quite some time ago, I did what you want to do as an experiment on an early version of OS6 (6.7.something, I think) using OpenVPN.  SoftEther is probably better for it, but it's not available as a .deb file, AFAIK.

Which ReadyNAS do you have?  I do not recommend you attempt what you want on a NAS with a single Ethernet port.

If you are installing a package that is large or may create a large file (like a log), it is recommended that you replace the installation directory with a link to a directory in /apps to keep from filling up the small OS partition.

I have a ReadyNas 312 with upgraded ram. I think it has 2 ports though only one is connected. I can ask someone to come plug a second one in.

I know it's a Linux box inside and my linux skills are very rusty, so I would appreciate more detailed guide on how to set it up. I can run commands over ssh, no issues, but it's quite complicated for me to know which ones I need :)

Google is your friend here.  It has been far too long since I did it, and I only did so as an experiment, so I can't guide you.  I just followed some generic instructions I Googled.
