"1 to 5 bays"
I'm examine HDD options to increase the capacity of my Ultra 6 and of course I'm looking at the new 4TB drives.
I've noticed some manufacturers state that their disks are suited to NAS systems with "1 to 5 bays". For instance, WD says: "WD Red hard drives are designed specifically for NAS systems that have 1 to 5 bays"
Can someone please explain what is the relevance of this. Why the specific mention of 5 bays? Does it mean there will be an issue using 6 such in a 6-bay NAS, such as my Ultra 6?
Many thanks,
N

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe old 6-bay units such as the Ultra 6 have an unusual design with 3 drives on top of others. Some WD RED disks have already been qualified for this model. The WD 4TB RED disks should work fine in the Ultra 6 though if you use disks outside the compatibility list do be aware of the warning on the hard disk compatibility list page.
