The "case" means the chassis which includes everything except the drives.
Unless they have a clause which specifically excludes the fans then the fans are included as they are hardware. The fans are an integral part of the chassis and as such would be included in warranty coverage.
The fan issue I had was after about a year I think.
I'd suggest you contact Netgear if you want more reassurance, or wait a while; someone from Netgear may respond to your query
Even if, hypothetically, the fans were not covered, is there a good nas manufacturer where you will get better fan coverage under warranty? You seem to have ruled out Synoloogy already.
