The good news, if you could call it that, about this problem is that the fix for a 4k sector size is likely very close or identical (coding) to get 16k or 32k sector sizes, which a lot of SSD drives use. Once the file system is configured and aligned for the SSD's true sector block size, those drives will start to really scream.
This could easily lead to the next generation of ReadyNAS based on 2.5" SATA/SAS drives running off of SAS controller(s).
So, it might be your pain will lead to great things. Keep up the good fight.
