4.1.9 keeps old ReadyNAS 600A ticking
The 4.1.9 firmware restores AFP performance to the expected level; thanks!
Beyond that, however, many thanks to Infrant, now Netgear, for providing regular firmware updates for my ReadyNAS 600A. Your commitment to a product that is now about seven years old is highly commendable.
I bought the device in September 2005 for $600. Here it its litany of woes, all minor thanks to hardware RAID:
- I bought four ST3250823AS drives (250GB, $109 each) at the same time as the 600A. Of those four drives, two remain running, with a reported 54,900 Power On Hours. That's about six years, three months of uptime.
- In November 2007, the third drive was replaced under warranty after about 17,500 Power On Hours (two years).
- In October 2008, the cylindrical case fan was replaced out of warranty with a part from Newegg.com, per the advice of Netgear tech support.
- The fourth drive was replaced out of warranty just recently. None of those original drives owes me anything by now.
- The blue power light hasn't worked reliably for some time, although I notice it did light briefly after the unit was powered down for several weeks.
- In order to flash the firmware this time, I had to replace the original CF card. Fortunately, the PC support guys at work had an old one lying around that they were willing to part with.
Bottom line: it still does its job well :-)
