Am I wise to Upgrade ?

At present I have a Duo v2 with 2x WD Red 2TB Discs, Its running OK streaming Music, Movies etc to my Android devices, S$ phone, Galaxy note 10.1 tablet using the Asus iCloud App with my router. ReadyDrop however is a bit slow and I had trouble getting Share permissions set up on the Duo v2. Now I'm tempted by a RN312 because of the extra processing power, I've been put off the 102 after reading poor reviews/remarks about it here on the Forum. I would welcome and value any advise from current owners as to whether it's a sensible upgrade ? ie is the DLNA problematic on the RN312 and is the current Firmware buggy with issues, if so would I be better off waiting a couple of months before changing.
Thank you in advance.

  • If your current NAS is running ok, I'd suggest waiting at least until 6.1.6. is released (and perhaps 6.2), and then look at feedback from RN316 users here.

Thank you very much for that, its what i sort of expected, very glad of the advise before shelling out my hard earned on a lemon.

  • If you are running ok, why change ? Do you need that processing power ?
Just wait for 6.2 and check the new features, maybe you'll need one of them and I hope 6.1.6 and 6.2 will fix everything faulty with the OS6 units.
6.1.5 made my RN104 actually usable, not perfect but it crashes less often and I haven't had to power cycle it the hard way since the update, waiting a few minutes is now enough when it locks (still dropping the transfer which is really annoying though). I'm waiting for new features that I think OS6 lacks with the 6.2. The OS is pretty basic so there is plenty of room for good surprises. I do agree 102/104 are limited in many ways and if you have the money I'd go with intel CPU too (HDMI, more software, more processing power...).

I don't think the products are lemons at all. But I do think OS6 hit a bump in the road recently, and that it would be best to wait until it gets sorted.

BTW, the RN102/RN104 would have similar performance to your duo v2. Since you are looking for more performance there is no reason to get one.

Looks like a wait is my best option. Thank you for the valuable advise. At least I would only have to purchase a 312 disc less as my WD Reds are on the ccompatibility list. Its the new OS interface that tempted me to change with the ability to simply send out invites to potential share users like Dropbox.
  • A test doesn't harm anyway, I suggest you to test the interface with the VM and to make up your mind.

You will be able to test the functionalities, the interface, I haven't tested ready cloud on the VM but should work too.
Ready cloud is not as flexible as dropbox is. You can't share a specific folder for example. I believe you can connect to ready drop from only one location at a time.
So just check out, see if that fits your needs and if you get positive updates on the forum consider buying. If that doesn't answer your needs then just try another brand.

Actually i liked that interface, a lot more intuitive. After reading about issues on OS6 devices I think I will hold off for a while as my Duo v2 is running OK. Thank you both for the advise, i will keep following developements of OS6 now.
    Cheers
