It's a shame there doesn't appear to be a 3rd party/open source solution that can be "plugged in" to give better protection, but I guess old signature is better than none.
That said, I've decided to vote with my feet and am weighing up a replacement NAS.

Of course the forum is still active.
IMO, the EoL consequences for NAS firmware are more significant than they are for switches and routers. Switching to a new NAS vendor is far more difficult than getting a different brand of switch or router.
They did notify 4.x and 5.x customers when their firmware went EoL back in 2016. I provided some feedback to Netgear saying that it would have been much better if they had done the same with OS-6.
