AntiVirus No Longer Updating
Since 30th September, I have been getting an email from my RN214 advising me that the "Antivirus scanner definition file update failed due to download failure. Check your Internet connection." I ...

Thanks for that, but I get the following response;
Failed to stop clamav-freshclam.timer: The name org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1 was not provided by any .service files
See system logs and 'systemctl status clamav-freshclam.timer' for details.
What should I do nest?

Simplest thing is to turn off the service.
Were you logging in as root when you connected with ssh?

Unless I've missed some other aspect of this one (and please correct if I have)...
...I've just altered the Alert settings on my NAS, and will see if the (now rather pointless) daily message "Antivirus scanner definition file update failed due to download failure" continues to appear, it shouldn't though.
So I've left the service itself running, as I still feel that any AV signature and process is better than nothing, even if it is outdated. End of the day I don't have any external traffic going direct to the NAS, and anything I download etc is scanned on local clients, which are kept up to date, before going anywhere near my NAS systems.
No, it's not a fix/solution in the fullest sense, but hopefully deals with a tiresome daily nag message!- StephenBJan 03, 2026Guru - Experienced User

Disabling AV alerts will prevent the email notifications, but won't stop the logging.
You could also try HansRL's suggestion - entering systemctl stop --now clamav-freshclam.timer from SSH (logged in as root). That will need to be re-entered every time you reboot the NAS (unless you make a mod to the startup scripts).

Yeah I get that, but I guess it's about what bothers each person - for me it's a pointless email every day adding to the clutter of an Inbox, I can live with the log entries for the effort it takes to stop that too :-)
