APC CS650 UPS + PC Shut Down

Deepdiver - if you are using the NAS as your primary data server, then the UPS should be connected to a USB port on the NAS, which you have already done. Then you should be able to pass the information onto the PC via a setting in Frontview. Click on the System button and then power button in the drop down menu. In the UPS Configuration section toward the bottom you can check the box in front of Enable Network Monitoring of Attached UPS. Then in the blank below that you put the IP address of the computer you want to allow to monitor the UPS status.
If you don't know the IP address (most likely dynamic), on the desktop of the PC in the lower right, click on the network icon (small computer icon with plug if wired, 5 bar step if wireless) and then click on "open network and sharing center" in the bottom of the pop up box. When that opens, you will see a map showing your computer, a house if you have set the network to home, and then a globe labeled Internet. To the right of the globe is "See Full Map". Click on that and it will give you a graphical map of your network and attached devices that are currently powered on. Moving the mouse cursor over an icon with turn the pointer to a pointing hand, and if you pause, it will display an info box with the IP address (and other info) relating to the item. Doing that for your computer will give you the IP address of the computer. That address can then be entered into the box for allowing access to the information on the NAS for UPS status.
APC has a program called Powerchute for shutting down a PC, and the latest is ver 3.01 for Win7 and Vista. I have never installed nor run this as I store no data on my PC. If the power goes off and I am here, I will shut it down manually. I very rarely leave the house or go to bed with the computer on. I also almost never walk away from the PC with unsaved data in memory. I do pass the info from one NAS to a second. Actually I have the UPS connected to my backup NAS and it passes the info to the primary. (Backup jobs run every night).
I cannot therefore tell you how to set up Powerchute, but it has to be easier than trying a generic manual solution. Besides, the download is free.
