I guess you could install the powerchute software on a PC and check that it recognises the UPS – this should tell you if the problem lies in the UPS (or the supplied cable) or if the ReadyNAS has faulty USB ports.
I remember when I first bought my UPS that I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to setup and configure ReadyNAS not only to shutdown upon notification of an ‘on battery’ event, but also to relay that signal via the on-board NUT service to other devices on my network. I would suggest that you have a problem somewhere in the chain if it’s not equally simple for you.
