Two clients, not at same time, had epic failures. One's DVR failed, no backup in play. The other, small office desktop failed, again no backup in play.
I bought this readynas thing for them.
So, client one needs ftp. In the DVR is backup and it asks for host options. DVR is asking for hostname and a port to do a backup. It is over WAN and I can't use the private IP and I tried using the public IP with a piped port but nope. Also thier POS is windows 10 and I could use the windows 10 backup to backup POS but again I need a public IP to do so. 192.168.1.34 aint going to work.
Second operation is basically the same. One small office desktop with win 10 needs backing up over WAN.
I am going to also try that dropbox thing everyone is doing and also manually backups but I do not think at all I can get dropbox onto a DVR.
Thanks

You should be able to use the public IP and port forwarding, but you need to forward more than just the main FTP port.
If it's an option, though, I recommend using a VPN. I personally use ZeroTier loaded directly on the applicable devices, as that limits their access only to each other and not everything on the network, but OpenVPN (best implemented on your routers) is also an option.
ReadyCloud is yet another option, but I don't use it.

And is there any documentation anywhere? Aint finding anything. The first step would be to decide on what VPN you are going to use, and set that up so both clients can reach the NAS.
In the case of the DVR, you could also use FTP with port forwarding - but a VPN is the most secure approach.
Does the router used at the ReadyNAS location support openVPN? Netgear Orbi and Nighthawk routers do.
