The TiVo integration has been working fine for me for a quite a while now, but it doesn't work quite like you are suggesting here. Your TiVo records straight to it's internal hard drive as normal. There is a scheduled job on the ReadyNAS that will check what programs are available (and marked to keep forever) on your TiVo's drive and copy them to the ReadyNAS. Now you have the program in two places. It is up to you to delete it from the local TiVo hard drive and/or the ReadyNAS when you no longer require that copy.
It works well to offload things from the TiVo. For example I let it backup all the Christmas movies/specials and then can delete them from the TiVo so I don't see them in available program list on the local drive all the time. Then I can copy them back when the season rolls around again this year.
I canceled my cable almost a year ago now and just use the TiVo OTA. It works pretty well and there are enough local HD channels here to keep the family satisfied.
There are some other great apps available like pyTivo and Streambaby that allow you to serve up other video content from the ReadyNAS to the TiVo.
