BiDirectional Replicate question

Hi, I am looking at getting 2 RN314s in two different locations with different data on them.

I see there are several questions about sync. I am not interested in sync, but backup - each readynas backs up to the other. Several questions:

1) Can two RN314s replicate to each other over the Internet? It would be a portion of the data, not all data. I assume there is a way to do this w/o creating an infinite loop of backup, but I can't find any presales documentation on it.
2) I did find some doc that said that the first back has to be on the LAN. That is not practical as each is serving a different location. Can this be set up over a WAN/Internet? The backup data will be 2-4 TBs.
3) Is there an additional charge or license required on one or both RN314s?
4) Can specific folders or content be replicated?
5) Is the replicated data on the remote RN314 accessible by file or total restore?
6) Is there separate security? Can the local admin access the backed up content of the remote readynas?

Thanks

  • as long as the source and destination folders are kept different/separate for the 2 devices, you should be able to them to back each other up.

    in other words;

    device1/somefolder1 > replicate > device2/somefolder1backup
    device2/somefolder2 > replicate > device1/somefolder2backup

you don't want to do; (infinite loop)
    device1/somefolder1 > replicate > device2/somefolder2
    device2/somefolder2 > replicate > device1/somefolder1
  • Thanks for some assistance. It is frustrating that these devices are sold on the open market, but there is no formal presales.

Here's my questions: Still 3 unanswered.

    1) Can two RN314s replicate to each other over the Internet? It would be a portion of the data, not all data. I assume there is a way to do this w/o creating an infinite loop of backup, but I can't find any presales documentation on it. YES.
    2) I did find some doc that said that the first back has to be on the LAN. That is not practical as each is serving a different location. Can this be set up over a WAN/Internet? The backup data will be 2-4 TBs. UNANSWERED
    3) Is there an additional charge or license required on one or both RN314s? NO, INCLUDED.
    4) Can specific folders or content be replicated? PRESUMABLY
    5) Is the replicated data on the remote RN314 accessible by file or total restore? UNANSWERED
    6) Is there separate security? Can the local admin access the backed up content of the remote readynas? UNANSWERED

Is there a pre-sales 800 number or anywhere else to turn?

    2) This depends on your internet speed etc. As the first backup is typically quite large it is recommended to do the first backup on the same LAN. An alternative that I think you may want would be seeding (I'm not sure whether we support that).

    5) You would restore from the point of time which you wish to restore from

    6) The local admin could access the backed up content. You should never make anyone the admin of a box that you don't want to have full access to the data on it.
