When you say that the drive isn't recognized, does that mean that you can't see any partitions on it, or does it mean that the computers aren't even aware that it's been connected? If your computers can see that the drive is present, it might still be erasable using the ATA "Secure Erase" or "Enhanced Secure Erase" commands; the easiest way to try that, if you can spare $5, is to download Parted Magic: https://partedmagic.com/
