Can someone explain NAS Drive Bay Limits?

We have a 12-Bay ReadyNAS with two 24-Bay Expansion units. The drives are all 6TB Seagate Ironwolf Pro which per specifications, support up to 16 bays... See below:

Seagate IronWolf Drive Specs

What exactly does that mean and should we not be using them in our combined 60-Bay system? Each volume is 12 drives (RAID10), not sure if that means we're within the 12-Bay limit or not...

Thoughts?

  • It’s not based on the number of drives in the volume, but rather the impact of things like the vibrations from having so many disks close together. So 24 disks in an expansion chassis would be above the number of disks recommended by the disk manufacturer.

Got it! So it is a physical/environmental rating based on vibrations etc... good to know, thank you!
