You can try a connection via USB, but it would be better if you simply took the side panel off your desktop, set the HD on a padded surface to protect the electronics and used the SATA cables from the DVD drive. Try the USB and see what happens. The worst case, the application to update the FW on the HD will not recognize the presence of the drive connected to the USB channel.
