Connecting mac book air with Lion to NAS NV+ directly

Thanks for your reply but I want to connect the NAS to my MacBook Air directly - using the ethernet cable plugged directly into the Mac (actually an ethernet USB adaptor as the Air does not have an ethernet port).
I want to go direct, bypassing the router - I understand it is possible.
The instructions sat to " .... first set a static IP address on your PC in the 192.168.168.xxx subnet, subnet mask 255.255.255.0. You can then use RAIDar to detect ReadyNAS, or you can open a browser and enter the ReadyNAS default IP address https://192.168.168.168/admin to connect to the ReadyNAS."
but I have no idea how to set up a static address on the Mac / NAS ? Anyone can help?
